Fable
Bound by no genre, Fable, the moniker of Holly Cosgrove has been carving her own path. The much-touted Devon-raised and Brighton-based artist has already been lauded by the likes of NME, BBC 6 Music, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, Radio X and Clash Magazine, to name all but a few seminal tastemakers who have showcased their support for the output of the musician.
DAUDI MATSIKO
Born in the U.K to Ugandan parents, Daudi Matsiko became hooked on guitar at a young age. Despite a wide-range of influences, including Radiohead, Slint, Mogwai to John Coltrane and Miles Davis, Daudi Matisko chosen to favour the sparse with quieter arrangements, which would create the fabric of Daudi Matsiko’s double 8-track EP as well as much-anticipated debut album ‘The King of Misery’, set for 2022.
With the likes of BBC Radio 1 already supporting Daudi Matsiko’s 2021 follow-up single ‘I Am Grateful for My Friends’ ahead of the much-anticipated ‘The King of Misery’ debut album set for release in 2022, if you’re not familiar with your future favourite folk-artist being Daudi Matisko just yet, you will be soon.
HARRY JAY-STEELE
Following acclaimed EP and single releases that saw plaudits from tastemakers across the industry, the tail-end of 2020 was gifted with the long-awaited debut album from London-based Harry Jay-Steele.
The talented singer/producer’s rich treasured chest of influences meant Boundries defied any-form of categorisation. The contemporary bass-heavy electronic-pop melting pot ended up becoming a late-to-the-party, 2020 album of the year contender. A truly glorious sonic cocktail, that sounds incredible on any high-end sound system.
YAZZ AHMED
Bahraini-British trumpet- flugelhornist and composer Yazz Ahmed has been a central figurehead in the current crop in the new-wave of UK jazz.
Having previously performed and recorded with the likes of Lee Scratch Perry, These New Puritans and Radiohead (playing the Flugelhorn on Radiohead’s ‘King of Limbs’.) Yazz Ahmed released ‘La Saboteuse’ (2017) on Naim Records and received plaudits from the likes of The Wire (Jazz Album of the Year); along with the likes of Stereogum, The Vinyl Factory and Bandcamp also naming the stunning LP in their end of the year lists.
The psychedelic-jazz sensation would also later join the BBC Orchestra, for a stunning live set at London Jazz Festival and continues to be a prominent name in the contemporary jazz-scene, where Yazz Ahmed demonstrates both Western and Arabic influences, with the end result always nothing short of wondrous.
OBRADOVIĆ-TIXIER DUO
The intriguing duo of Croatian jazz drummer Lada Obradović and French pianist David Tixier that is Obradović-Tixier Duo would see the release of their debut album ‘The Boiling Stories of a Smoking Kettle’ in 2020.
Together, the duo swept the board with a host of ‘first prize’ and ‘best band’, including the RéZZo Focal prize at Jazz à Vienne and a soloist prize for Lada Obradović at the 2019 La Défense Jazz Festival. The duo’s outstanding musicality and super-contemporary and ever-so-stylish sound is as compelling as it is exciting.
Also aside from winning awards and performing with Obradović-Tixier Duo, Lada Obradović designed the first Jazz Series of cymbals for TRX Cymbals and has launched a charity project, Start as You Are, for which she designs shoes and which Tixier manages. On top of the multiple projects, Lada Obradović also performs in Netflix series ‘The Eddy’, for Oscar winning director Damien Chazelle (La La Land, Whiplash).
Naim Records history
Formed in 1993, Naim Records would become the label arm to high-end audio manufacture Naim Audio. An outlet to ensure the release of high-quality audio recordings by Naim founder himself, Julian Vereker MPE (7 May 1945 – 14 January 2000), Naim Records was birthed out of the cathedral city of Salisbury and for 30 years, has been releasing music with the ethos of great music. From Sons of Kemet, Fable, Yazz Ahmed to Charlie Haden and Kurt Elling, the world of Naim Records is an eclectic one, where there’s no adherence to genre.
STUART MCALLUM & SEAN FORAN
Located across two continents, Australian pianist Sean Foran (also of Naim Records alumni Trichtonomy) and Manchester, UK guitarist Stuart McCallum collaborated on the aptly titled ‘Counterpart’ in 2019. Coming together in Manchester for a few days, with song ideas, the duo then let the album unfold during the recording process – allowing for an organic approach.
Ranging from lush cinematic textures to delicate piano and guitar improvisations, the album traverses sounds from modern classical, to new jazz, and ambient music. Deeply melodic, with rich textural interaction, the improvisations are nothing short og captivating, Foran plays grand piano and synthesisers, while McCallum conjures a vast array of sounds from his acoustic and electric guitars. Sonic similarities to the jazz stylings of Pat Metheny and modern classical sounds of Nils Frahm and Hauschka can be found throughout, with catchy melodies tracing a line through each song.
SONS OF KEMET
Two-time Best Jazz Act MOBO award winners, Sons of Kemet are an utter tour-de-force. Formed by Shabaka Hutchings, Oren Marshall, Seb Rochford, and Tom Skinner, the London outfit would see the release of their acclaimed debut album ‘Burn’ (2013) via Naim Records. Becoming one of the stand out releases of the year with, the Afrobeat meets jazz mind-melter that merged a medley of sounds from across the globe would make a statement and receive critical acclaim.
2015 follow-up ‘Lest We Forget’ continued their exploration into cosmopolitan global cosmic-jazz sounds meets Afrobeat and zestful—bombastic-funk. The heady-dancefloor frenzy that is the sophomore album once against received major plaudits, and proved that Sons of Kemet are no fluke and that they stand among as one of the best bands in their field.
In the post-Naim Records days, Sons of Kemet still stand tall as one of the absolute best bands in the world today.
CHARLIE HADEN
A legend within the world of music in the truest sense of the word, the late-great multiple Grammy-award winner and Grammy lifetime achievement award-winner Charlie Haden (1937 – 2014) was an instrumental part of Naim Records across the years.
The immensely prolific legendary figure worked with a who’s-who of fellow musical royalty, from working with Yoko Ono, Ringo Starr, Pat Methany, Beck, Dizzy Gillespie all the way to Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr. Ultimately Charlie Haden’s legacy is that of a pioneer of jazz.
With a number of Naim Records releases, Charlie Haden’s first album release via Naim Records was in 1994 with CD005 ‘The Private Collection’ and CD006 ‘The Private Collection Volume No.2’, that would see both eventually becoming part of a double album in 2007.
EMPIRICAL
Empirical are another with a long-term association with Naim Records. The 2010 MOBO award Best Jazz Act winners stand among the very best and most admired in the world of contemporary jazz.
Empirical’s first release on Naim Records ‘Out 'n' In’, that would feature Nathaniel Facey (alto sax); Lewis Wright (vibes); Tom Farmer (double bass); Shaney Forbes (drums/percussion) plus special guest Julian Siegel (bass clarinet/tenor sax) would be a tribute to Eric Dolphy (1928 -1964), who was a personal hero to Nathaniel Facey. The hard-bop jazz sensation that is ‘Out 'n' In’ would again receive critical acclaim.
Empirical would return again on Naim with another two sensational albums of contemporary jazz. Receiving industry wide acclaim, Empircal’s output on Naim was nothing short of a marvel.
HUEY & THE NEW YORKERS
Front person of Fun Lovin’ Criminals and BBC Music presenter Huey Morgan is without a doubt a truly legendary figure within the music industry and really needs no introduction. Released in 2012, Huey Morgan would join the Naim Records family in 2012 with his long-awaited debut album with ‘Say It To My Face’ under Huey and The Yorkers.
The basis of Huey and The Yorkers pre-dates the days of ‘Fun Lovin’ Criminals’, when Huey Morgan and his veteran New York Blues scene pals would jam and record their favourite tunes.
For Huey Morgan’s first album under his own name, he would turn to his life-long musician friends for instrumentation with the Tangiers Blues Band: Chris Scianni (guitar), King (bass), while Frank Benbini (Fun Lovin’ Criminals) chipped in with drums. Pete Levin, from Grammy winning Blind Boys of Alabama (keyboards), Naim Cortazzi (ukulele) - also a member of the group New Yorkers along with Frank Benbini, along with harmonica from Grammy-award winning photographer Danny Clinch (taker of the famed Tupac Shakur 'Thug Life' shot, now the man behind Huey's new art-work).
LAURENCE HOBGOOD
Another Grammy-award winning legend who’s been a big part of the Naim Records roster is American jazz sensation Laurence Hopgood, who would release with Naim Records on multiple occasions, with various legendary figures.
Working with the likes of being Paul Wertico (also of The Pet Methany Group and who previously released 2Live) and Brian Torff respectively, creating a jazz fusion super group for ‘State of the Union’, to working with fellow Grammy-award winners Kurt Elling and Charlie Haden – Lauerence Hobgood has had a varied release schedule with Naim Records - and beyond.
